KEYBOARDING AT TCS

Dear Parents,

Keyboarding is an important skill. We believe that the most efficient time to focus on mastering keyboarding is during third, fourth, fifth and sixth grades. The ability to locate letters automatically takes some commitment. Third graders spend 4 weeks in the computer lab receiving their introduction to keyboarding using Type to Learn 4 (TTL4). Although it is not necessary, first and second graders often enjoy practicing keyboarding, and if that is the case feel free to download TTL4 (see below) and let them use it when they want to.

During computer lab in the upper grades, we focus on the acquisition of other technological skills and competencies, such as word processing, data analysis, Scratch (programming), Adobe Photoshop Elements 8.0, Dreamweaver MX 2004 (web design), various Web 2.0 tools and Lego Robotics.

We are asking that children grades 3 - 6 practice keyboarding at home. The best way to learn to type is through short, regular sessions of 15 minutes, totalling about 30 minutes a week. I will do regular assessments of each student’s keyboarding skills and notify you in your child's progress report if more practice is needed. We highly recommend that students master keyboarding before they leave TCS.

The school has purchased the web-enabled version of TTL4 (http://commerce.sunburst.com/product.aspx?p=88306) so that it can be used by students at school and home while maintaining centralized scores.

Here are two ways that you can download TTL4 at home.

Your child's username is the same as their Veracross username. It is usually your child's first name followed by the first letter of their last name (all lower case).

Password for every student:

Account Code for every student:

If your child has not used TTL4 in the computer lab this year, they will be asked to take a pre-test to assess their skill level. After they take the pre-test they will be taken to the appropriate lesson. Each lesson has a number of sections that need to be completed. Upon completing each section a green check will appear. Upon completing each section of a lesson, your child can go onto the next lesson.

If you have any questions, feel free to e mail (tamaraw@thechildrensschool.com) or call me at 404 835-4602.

Thanks,

Tamara Weinstein
